This collection brings together our full range of single disc and dual disc clutch kits, from daily-driver organic facings to hybrid organic/Kevlar and organic/feramic pairings for towing, off-road, and high-output street builds. Every South Bend Clutch kit is matched to a platform and use case: diesel trucks like Cummins, Power Stroke, and Duramax; domestic passenger cars and American muscle; LS/T56, TR6060, and Magnum applications; European performance platforms; Jeep, off-road, and 4x4; sport compact; and VW/Audi. If you’re searching for a clutch that holds torque without sacrificing drivability, this is where you’ll find it.

Material science sits at the heart of every SBC clutch kit. Organic facings deliver the smoothest engagement and quietest operation for daily use. Ceramic blends add bite and heat resistance for tuned power levels and repeated high-energy events. Kevlar is renowned for outstanding wear stability and flywheel friendliness when properly bedded. Feramic brings exceptional thermal resilience for heavy towing, long grades, and track abuse. We pair compounds with full-face or segmented facings to balance initial bite, heat shedding, and even load distribution across the disc, then tune the marcel (cushion) and groove geometry to widen the engagement window and move heat away from the contact patch. The result is a kit that behaves like an OE-quality street clutch when you want finesse, with the reserve you need when torque and temperature rise.

Clamp strategy and release characteristics define pedal feel and shift quality, so our pressure plates are re-arched and fulcrum-optimized to deliver clamp where it counts without turning the pedal into an on/off switch. Balanced rotating groups keep the system smooth at RPM. Robust cover, strap, and finger designs resist distortion across heat cycles, which preserves flatness, minimizes chatter, and protects synchros during quick shifts. Whether you’re backing a trailer up a steep driveway or clipping an apex at a track day, a properly matched SBC clutch kit lets you modulate bite precisely with a predictable, linear pedal.

Single disc clutch kits remain a great choice for modest torque and maximum simplicity, especially in daily drivers and commuter builds. Dual disc clutch kits multiply surface area to increase torque capacity and heat management while maintaining a friendly pedal and longer engagement window. For tuned diesels, LS builds, and modern turbo platforms, dual disc solutions often offer the best blend of civility and margin—more area, less heat, longer life—without resorting to harsh puck layouts. In either configuration, we design the disc hub to match the platform’s torsional behavior: sprung hubs that absorb shock and quell rollover noise in synchronized gearboxes, or rigid hubs for competition builds where crisp response and durability at temperature outweigh NVH considerations.

Flywheel interface is equally important. Our steel flywheels emphasize the correct step/height, surface finish, and hardness to maintain release clearance and resist hot spotting and glazing. When converting from dual-mass to single-mass flywheels (common in European and diesel platforms), we engineer balance and NVH characteristics so the resulting clutch kit remains usable in traffic and comfortable on long drives. For applications that prefer sharper transient response, lighter flywheel options are matched to the clutch kit’s clamp curve and facing design so drivability stays intact while throttle response improves.

Because this collection spans so many platforms, we label each kit by use case to simplify selection. Daily-driver street kits prioritize smooth take-off, low noise, and long wear. Towing and work-truck kits add thermal headroom and clamp for grade control and repeated launches with a trailer. Street performance kits balance modulation and hold for bolt-ons, cam and head packages, boost, and sticky tires. Off-road kits emphasize control at low speed and heat stability during crawls. European and sport compact kits preserve synchronized shift quality and release precision while adding capacity for track days, mountain runs, and highway endurance. American muscle kits cover everything from classic small-blocks to modern supercharged V8s with options that stay cooperative Monday through Friday and deliver on Saturdays.

Installation best practices make or break outcomes. We recommend verifying hydraulic health, setting release bearing free play to spec, and resurfacing or replacing the flywheel to the correct step and finish. A proper break-in—normal stop-and-go driving to seat the facings evenly—establishes the engagement personality you’ll enjoy for the long haul. Do it right, and an SBC clutch kit will reward you with quiet take-off, a stable pedal, confident torque hold, and clean release under heat.

If your search brought you here via terms like performance clutch kit, dual disc clutch kit, towing clutch, LS clutch, G56 clutch, NV4500 clutch, BMW clutch, Audi clutch, Porsche clutch, VW clutch, WRX clutch, or sport compact clutch, you’re in the right place. Explore the kits in this collection by platform and usage, and match friction material and hub style to your torque curve, gearing, tire, curb weight, and terrain. South Bend Clutch builds systems for the way you drive—systems that work when you need them most.

Ultimately, the value of a clutch kit isn’t just in peak torque numbers; it’s in how consistently it performs as parts heat up, cool down, and wear together. That’s why our engineering focuses on repeatable clamp curves, stable coefficients of friction across temperature, and facing layouts that keep the contact patch flat under load. If you’re upgrading from stock or refreshing a seasoned build, choose an SBC clutch kit that aligns feel, strength, and longevity. It’s more than a replacement—it’s an investment in control.

Sport Compact Clutch Kits & Components

South Bend Clutch develops sport compact clutch systems for drivers who ask one car to do everything—daily commute in dense traffic, weekend canyon runs, autocross and HPDE sessions, the occasional drag pass, and long road trips with friends and gear. If you’re building or maintaining a manual-transmission GTI/Golf R, Audi S3/S4 (manual), Subaru WRX/STI, Mitsubishi EVO, Honda Civic Si/Type R, Mazda Miata/MX-5, BRZ/GR86, Nissan Z/350Z/370Z, or another modern/import performance platform, this collection is your roadmap. We engineer every system as a matched set—friction material and facing architecture, diaphragm and cover geometry, hub damping, flywheel mass and finish, hydraulics, pilot/release components, alignment tools, and hardware—so you get the two things a sport compact lives on: a wide, predictable engagement window at low speed and fast, clean release at high RPM for crisp synchronized shifts. When those outcomes are right, the car feels OE-polished on Monday and track-capable on Saturday.

Start with friction, because it sets the car’s personality. Full-face organic facings remain the reference for street-first builds: the broadest, most forgiving engagement window for parking ramps and stop-and-go, low noise on rough city pavement, and stable friction over everyday temperature swings. When power, heat, or duty cycle climb—tuned turbo torque, mountain routes, summer traffic, back-to-back autocross runs—our organic/Kevlar hybrids add wear stability and hot-behavior composure while remaining flywheel-friendly when bedded properly. For cars that see serious track time or that combine tuned torque with sticky tires, organic/feramic hybrids (OFE/OFEK) add bite and thermal resilience without turning the pedal into an on/off switch; we preserve modulation with full-face or carefully segmented facings and a tuned marcel (cushion) layer. Puck-only “race” discs have a place in competition, but most drivers prefer the broader control zone and gearbox sympathy of full-face architectures, especially on synchronized gearboxes that demand predictable separation at redline.

Pressure plate strategy is where “hold” meets “human.” Sport compacts reward a linear pedal with a clear feedback ridge you can place mid-corner and a release that stays precise at the top of third, not just the bottom of first. We re-arch diaphragms and set fulcrum geometry so clamp rises where it matters while effort remains reasonable for daily use. Covers, straps, and pressure rings are selected for rigidity at temperature so faces stay parallel; parallel faces mean stable friction coefficients, fewer resonance bands you’d call “chatter,” and cleaner synchronized shifts when the drivetrain is heat-soaked. Balanced rotating assemblies keep shifters calm at highway speeds and protect synchros during quick 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts. What you feel is a pedal that doesn’t wander as the session goes on, an engagement window that doesn’t shrink when hot, and a gearbox that keeps rewarding clean technique.

Hub damping is the quiet hero in this category. A short pedal and peaky powerband magnify tiny inconsistencies; a disc that hangs even slightly on dry or peened splines can cost a shift at 6,800 rpm. We calibrate sprung hubs to absorb low-frequency torsional inputs and calm gear rollover in synchronized boxes, minimizing buzz at idle and smoothing light-throttle transitions in traffic. Correct spring rates and windows give you a pedal that feels alive, not spongy, and a driveline that behaves during lift-throttle, heel-toe, and on-off transitions. Rigid hubs have a home in extreme heat or sequential/unsynchronized setups, but for dual-purpose street/track sport compacts, a tuned sprung hub preserves synchros and civility.

Flywheels decide both surface quality and driveline character. South Bend steel flywheels for sport compact platforms are machined to the exact step/recess height, hardness, parallelism, and surface finish our clutch families expect. That geometry preserves release clearance across heat cycles and protects against hot spotting and glazing. Mass selection is use-case driven. Moderate-mass single-mass flywheels (SMFs) preserve first-gear creep and stoplight smoothness while sharpening response enough for autocross and back roads. Lighter options quicken transient response and rev-matching but must be paired thoughtfully so synchronized boxes remain happy (too little inertia can make daily drivability edgy). Where OE dual-mass flywheels (DMFs) were used, our SMF conversions are balanced and validated for NVH with hub damping tuned to keep the car’s premium feel.

Hydraulics translate intent into clean disengagement—and many “clutch problems” in this segment are hydraulic problems wearing a friction mask. Masters with tired internal finishes can block the compensation port and let engagement height creep during a commute; slaves can lose throw as fluid thins with heat; long, hot lines can aerate fluid and make the pedal feel inconsistent run-to-run. South Bend hydraulic kits—masters, slaves, and pre-bled assemblies where available—are spec’d around the total throw required by the pressure plate fingers, with bore sizes and lever ratios that move higher-clamp diaphragms decisively without wrecking your left leg. When hydraulics are right, the pedal you set in the morning is the pedal you feel at the end of a session.

Pilot bearings, alignment tools, and hardware are the precision details that decide if an “upgrade” behaves like a factory solution. A pilot that drags the input shaft turns first and reverse into a debate at stoplights and ruins high-RPM separation; an off-center disc from a one-size alignment tool forces the transmission home with bolts, scoring guide tubes and brinnelling pilots before you ever start the engine. Our pilots are specified for material, finish, and press fit that keep the input shaft concentric with the crank; our exact-fit alignment tools match pilot and spline geometry so the gearbox slides home without force. Hardware kits include the correct bolt lengths, head profiles, and washer footprints plus platform-specific torque and lubrication guidance (dry/oiled/threadlocker) so clamp is real, not just a number on a wrench. Bellhousing dowels matter; tiny angular errors feel like “gearbox buzz” in a light chassis.

Platform patterns help narrow choice. VW/Audi MQB (GTI/Golf R, S3) owners who daily drive and tune mild-to-moderate typically love full-face organic or organic/Kevlar on a moderate-mass SMF—quiet in garages, crisp on ramps, consistent after a canyon run. Tuned turbo torque or track days point to OFE/OFEK hybrids with a sprung hub and balanced SMF for thermal headroom and repeatable release. Subaru WRX/STI drivers prize a broad engagement window for winter traction and a pedal that stays consistent when hot; organic for OE-plus, OK for long intervals under heat, OFE/OFEK for big power and lapping. Civic Si/Type R folks often choose organic for daily/spirited, OK for hot climates and mountain towns, OFE for tuned/track mixes; correct mass keeps synchros honest. Miata and BRZ/GR86 benefit from full-face organic or OK for street/HPDE balance; lighter flywheels feel great but keep some inertia for smoothness and rev-match “catch.” Nissan Z/350Z/370Z reward hybrids in tuned applications with care for hub damping to manage driveline lash; moderate mass helps keep the pedal civilized.

Dual disc systems belong in high-output or endurance-heat builds—big-turbo MQB, time-attack EJ/FA, heavily boosted K-series, or Z cars on sticky tires that see long sessions. Doubling area lowers interface temperature, increases capacity, and—when paired with full-face facings, tuned hubs, and a balanced steel flywheel—keeps the pedal friendly enough for commuting to the event. The key is recipe, not just parts count: clamp curve, facing mix, and hub strategy must support synchronized boxes at redline and parking lots at 1 mph.

Daily drivability remains the north star. A great sport compact clutch is one you forget about until you need it. In practice, that means a first inch of pedal you can meter in traffic, a calm take-off on a damp morning, a predictable engagement window that doesn’t migrate as heat builds, and synchronized shifts that keep their crispness when you’re chasing a time. Those are system outcomes. South Bend’s approach—friction and facings matched to diaphragm geometry and hub damping, bolted to a flywheel with the right mass and finish, moved by hydraulics that stay consistent—delivers those outcomes day after day.

Installation best practices are simple, repeatable, and non-negotiable. Verify flywheel step/recess height and surface finish against our spec for the clutch family you chose. Seat the pilot bearing square with proper support—never drive on the inner race. Dry-fit the disc on the input shaft; it must slide freely across the full spline length. Apply a thin film of high-temp, non-gumming spline lube and wipe excess to avoid hydraulic lock inside the hub. Center the disc with the exact-fit alignment tool fully seated in the pilot; torque the cover in a star pattern in stages to the specified torque and lubrication state. Confirm release bearing height and fork angles; some platforms require pivot adjustment or shims to land the release window where your foot expects. Route hydraulic lines away from downpipes and converters; add heat sleeves where proximity is unavoidable. Choose pre-bled assemblies when offered to eliminate trapped air in complex runs. Do these things once and you won’t be chasing ghosts later.

Break-in is part of the engineering. Normal, mixed street driving for the first few hundred miles seats facings evenly and establishes the micro-geometry that defines engagement character. Avoid repeated high-RPM clutch kicks, extended hill-holds with heavy slip, or hot-lap lapping during bedding. Organic settles quickly; Kevlar-containing hybrids reward patience with exceptional longevity; feramic hybrids stabilize with normal driving, then deliver the thermal headroom you chose them for. Complete break-in and the “feel” you paid for becomes the feel that lasts: quiet take-offs, low-speed precision, high-RPM separations that protect synchros.

Troubleshooting in sport compacts is easier when you tie symptoms to temperature and time. If first and reverse balk only when hot, suspect marginal pilot drag or insufficient slave travel as fluid thins; confirm line routing and master compensation-port function. If the engagement point “walks” over a commute or session, look for aeration, heat-soaked lines, or a master blocking the port. If chatter appears only after heat soak, inspect flywheel finish and cover parallelism, then confirm torque and sequence. If a new clutch feels “too aggressive” for parking lots, check step/height, marcel, and bearing heights before blaming friction; a millimeter error in stack height can masquerade as personality. If high-RPM upshifts are inconsistent, dry-fit the disc on the input shaft (look for spline peening), re-lube correctly, and verify hydraulic stroke at redline (some platforms benefit from line/bleed updates or a larger-bore master matched to the kit).

Because many buyers search by symptoms, this page speaks those languages too: GTI clutch upgrade for tuned daily, Golf R clutch that’s smooth in traffic, WRX clutch that doesn’t chatter, STI clutch for track days, Civic Type R clutch for bolt-on power, Miata clutch for HPDE, BRZ/GR86 clutch that keeps street manners, 350Z/370Z clutch with better engagement, S3/S4 clutch that holds stage-1/2 torque, clutch not fully disengaging when hot, pedal height moves when warm, pilot bearing causing reverse crunch, pre-bled hydraulic kit sport compact, flywheel resurface spec after DMF delete. Each query maps to a system choice we’ve validated: friction family, facing geometry, diaphragm curve, hub damping, flywheel mass and finish, hydraulic throw, pilots, alignment tools, and hardware that keep faces parallel and release precise.

Selection is straightforward once you define your life with the car. If you daily drive in dense traffic and hit back roads on weekends, choose full-face organic with a moderate-mass SMF and matched hydraulics for OE-plus refinement. If you’ve added power—flash, turbo, or supercharger—and drive spiritedly, step to an organic/Kevlar or OFE/OFEK hybrid, keep a sprung hub, and pick flywheel mass that preserves synchro happiness. If you’re at events regularly, consider a lighter SMF and hybrid facings or a dual disc; pair with hydraulics that hold pedal height at temperature. In all cases, refresh the pilot and release components, use the exact-fit alignment tool, install the correct hardware with our torque and lubrication guidance, and follow break-in. That’s the South Bend Clutch path to a sport compact that feels factory-polished yet delivers the headroom you built it for.

Ultimately, a great sport compact clutch isn’t about a single big torque number—it’s about repeatable control at the extremes and invisibility in the mundane. You should be able to roll into a parallel-parking spot at 1 mph, then rail a fast 3-4 upshift at redline an hour later, with the same pedal and the same confidence. South Bend Clutch builds for that experience. Choose the kit and components in this collection that match your platform, power, and purpose. Install to our geometry and torque guidance, pair with the right flywheel mass and hydraulics, complete break-in, and enjoy a driveline that feels like it left the factory this way—only now it holds the torque you actually make and keeps saying “yes” when you ask for more.

Ceramic Friction Material
Ceramic clutch material is engineered for high-performance and heavy-duty applications where heat resistance and torque capacity are critical. Constructed using ceramic-based compounds, these clutch discs offer superior friction and power transfer, making them ideal for demanding situations such as performance racing, competitive off-roading, and heavy towing. Ceramic material excels in preventing clutch fade under extreme heat and stress.
While ceramic clutches deliver unmatched torque handling, they tend to have a more aggressive engagement, which can lead to a slightly harsher feel during gear shifts. This makes them better suited for experienced drivers and performance vehicles rather than casual everyday driving where smooth engagement is preferred.

Sprung Hub Style
The sprung hub clutch is a versatile design focused on balancing performance with drivability. It features a series of dampening springs integrated into the hub, which help absorb vibrations and reduce shock during clutch engagement. This design is ideal for daily drivers, street performance vehicles, and light towing, where smooth gear changes and reduced drivetrain stress are essential.
By minimizing shock transfer, the sprung hub clutch prolongs the life of other drivetrain components, making it a reliable option for vehicles needing both comfort and moderate power handling. While slightly less direct in power transfer than a solid hub, it offers a superior driving experience for most street and light performance applications.

Single Disc
A single disc clutch is the most common and straightforward clutch design, featuring one friction disc to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. Known for its simplicity and reliability, it is ideal for standard vehicles, daily drivers, and light performance applications. Single disc clutches provide smooth engagement, making them perfect for casual driving and moderate power outputs.
While single disc clutches offer excellent drivability and cost-effectiveness, they have limited torque capacity compared to multi-disc setups. This design is best suited for vehicles with moderate horsepower levels where comfort, longevity, and ease of use are the primary concerns.

Stage 2 Clutch
A Stage 2 clutch offers a significant performance boost compared to stock and Stage 1 setups. Designed with stronger friction materials like Kevlar or ceramic, it provides higher torque capacity and heat resistance. This stage is ideal for moderately modified vehicles, including turbocharged setups, nitrous systems, and track-ready builds needing enhanced grip and reduced slippage.
Although it offers increased power handling, Stage 2 clutches can introduce a slightly stiffer pedal feel and more aggressive engagement than Stage 1, making them better suited for drivers prioritizing performance while still requiring reasonable street drivability.

At South Bend Clutch, we are committed to delivering high-quality clutch systems that meet the demands of a wide range of driving experiences, from daily commuting to extreme racing conditions. Our SBC SD1-2645-78 Clutch Kit exemplifies this commitment through its innovative design, superior materials, and exceptional performance across various driving conditions. Developed with the needs of our diverse customer base in mind, this clutch kit is designed to enhance the driving experience by providing reliable performance and durability.
Our clutch kits are designed utilizing years of engineering experience and are made to withstand the rigorous demands placed on them, whether it's for heavy-duty trucking, high-performance racing, or everyday driving. The choice of friction materials, including Ceramic, Organic, Kevlar, and Organic/Ceramic combinations, ensures that every customer finds the perfect match for their specific application.
The SBC SD1-2645-78 Clutch Kit, along with its variants, caters to a wide range of stages - from Stage 1 to Stage 4 - each designed to meet different levels of performance requirements. This flexibility allows drivers to select the perfect clutch based on their vehicle's power output and usage.
Stage 1 variants are ideal for those seeking a reliable upgrade from stock clutches, offering enhanced engagement and durability without sacrificing drivability. Our Stage 2 options are tailored for daily drivers who demand a little more from their vehicles, providing a balance between performance and comfort. The Stage 3 kits are engineered for enthusiasts who push their vehicles to the limit, featuring materials and designs that offer high torque handling and heat dissipation for spirited driving or light track use. Finally, Stage 4 clutches are crafted for extreme conditions, perfect for heavily modified vehicles that see aggressive track use or competition.
The SBC SD1-2645-78 Clutch Kit and its variants are designed with a single disc style, with options ranging from 6-paddle to full face, depending on the specific model. This variety ensures that the clutch engagement and heat handling characteristics are optimized for the intended use, whether it's smooth engagement for street driving or rapid heat dissipation for racing applications.
Notably, our clutches are designed without including a flywheel, allowing customers the flexibility to use their preferred flywheel type or to integrate the clutch kit with their existing setup. This approach ensures that our products can be tailored to meet the exact needs of the vehicle and driver, providing a personalized driving experience.
Furthermore, our clutch kits come equipped with necessary installation tools, such as an alignment tool, to ensure a straightforward and hassle-free installation process. While we opt not to include throw out bearings, pilot bushings, or flywheels in the kit, these decisions are made to offer our customers the choice to select these components based on their specific requirements or existing modifications.
Choosing the right clutch kit from South Bend Clutch means selecting a product that is backed by extensive research, development, and testing. Our commitment to quality is evident in the design and manufacture of our clutch kits, ensuring that each component meets the highest standards of durability and performance.
