NA Miata (1990-1997)
The Original Roadster
The NA Miata defined the modern lightweight sports car. With the 1.6L (116 HP) and later 1.8L (128 HP) engines, these cars prioritize handling over outright power. The driving experience is legendary.
Many owners add power through forced induction. Turbo NA Miatas commonly reach 200-300 HP, transforming the platform's character while maintaining its lightweight balance.
Track Day Favorite
The NA's light weight (~2,200 lbs) makes it incredible on track. Even modest power increases feel dramatic. These cars dominate amateur racing series and autocross events.
NA Specifications
- Engine 1.6L/1.8L
- HP 116-128
- Weight 2,200 lbs
- Trans 5MT
- Clutch Size 225mm
NB Miata (1999-2005)
Evolution of the Formula
The NB refined the NA's formula with improved rigidity and the 1.8L engine across the range. The Mazdaspeed Miata (2004-2005) brought factory turbo power with 178 HP.
The Mazdaspeed variant proved the platform could handle boost. Many NB owners follow the factory's lead with turbo builds that easily exceed 250 HP.
NB Specifications
- Engine 1.8L
- HP 140-178
- Weight 2,400 lbs
- Trans 5MT/6MT

NC Miata (2006-2015)
More Power, More Weight
The NC grew in size and power with the 2.0L MZR engine producing 158-167 HP. Improved safety features added weight (2,500 lbs), but the driving dynamics remained excellent.
The NC's larger engine bay accommodates more modification options. Supercharger and turbo kits are readily available, pushing power past 300 HP on stock internals.
NC Specifications
- Engine 2.0L MZR

The ND's weight reduction makes every horsepower count. Turbo and supercharger kits push power past 250 HP while maintaining the car's legendary balance. The RF hardtop variant adds style without significant weight penalty.

Miata Clutch FAQs
Common questions about Miata clutches
What clutch for a turbo Miata?
For turbocharged Miata builds:
- 200-250 HP: Stage 2 handles this reliably
- 250-350 HP: Stage 3 for headroom
- 350+ HP: Stage 3 Endurance or dual disc
Boost adds torque that stock clutches can't handle. Size your clutch for your target power level.
Should I use a lightweight flywheel?
Miata owners love lightweight flywheels, and for good reason:
- Pros: Faster revs, quicker throttle response, more engaging driving feel
- Cons: May be harder to launch smoothly, slight idle roughness
For track-focused builds, lightweight flywheels are almost universally recommended. For daily drivers, stock weight may be preferred.
How long do Miata clutches last?
Clutch life depends heavily on usage:
- Street driving: 80,000-100,000+ miles typical
- Track days: 30,000-50,000 miles depending on frequency
- Racing: Measured in events, not miles
The Miata's light weight is actually easier on clutches than heavier cars. Proper break-in and technique maximize lifespan.
ND Miata clutch options?
The ND platform uses the same 225mm clutch size as previous generations:
- Stock ND (155-181 HP): Stock clutch is adequate
- Bolt-ons/tune (200-220 HP): Stage 2 for headroom
- Turbo/supercharged: Stage 3 for boosted power
Our clutches are fully compatible with the ND/ND2's SkyActiv-G engine.
