ST

Ford Focus ST (2013-2018)

Hot Hatch Revival

The Focus ST brought genuine hot hatch performance to America with the 2.0L EcoBoost producing 252 HP. The turbocharged four-cylinder responds exceptionally well to bolt-on modifications and tuning.

Stage 1 tunes push the ST past 300 HP. With an upgraded intercooler and downpipe, 330+ HP is achievable. Full-built engines push past 500 HP, making the platform incredibly versatile.

FWD Performance

The ST's limited-slip differential and aggressive chassis tuning make it a formidable performer despite being front-wheel drive. The clutch handles the demands of high-power FWD launches.

Focus ST Specifications

  • Engine 2.0L EcoBoost
  • HP 252
  • Weight 3,200 lbs
  • Trans Getrag MT82
  • Clutch Size 240mm
RS

Ford Focus RS (2016-2018)

AWD Weapon

The Focus RS elevated Ford's hot hatch to all-wheel drive with 350 HP from the 2.3L EcoBoost. The innovative GKN Twinster rear axle allows drift mode and aggressive power distribution.

The RS responds incredibly well to tuning. Stage 1 builds exceed 400 HP, and Stage 2+ approaches 500 HP. The AWD system handles the power distribution effectively.

Head Gasket Note

Early RS models had head gasket concerns. Ford addressed this, and most cars have received updates. Regardless, proper clutch capacity is essential for modified examples.

  • Weight 3,400 lbs
  • Trans Getrag MT82

SVT

Focus SVT/ST170 (2002-2004)

The Original

Before EcoBoost, the Focus SVT (ST170 in Europe) delivered enthusiast appeal with the 170 HP Zetec engine. The Getrag transmission offered excellent shift feel.

These cars remain popular for modification. Turbo builds push power past 300 HP, transforming the lightweight chassis into a serious performer.

Focus Clutch FAQs

Common questions about Focus clutches

What clutch for a Stage 2 Focus ST?

For Stage 2 Focus ST builds (320-350 HP):

  • Daily driver priority: Stage 2 Daily handles this reliably
  • Aggressive driving: Stage 2 Endurance for track days
  • Planning more mods: Stage 3 for headroom

The stock clutch typically starts slipping around 300 HP on aggressive tunes.

Focus RS clutch recommendations?

The RS's AWD and higher power level demand appropriate clutch capacity:

  • Stock-400 HP: Stage 2 Endurance
  • Stage 2 (450+ HP): Stage 3 recommended
  • Big turbo: Stage 3 Endurance or Dual Disc

The RS's AWD system grips hard during launches. Size your clutch accordingly.

Will a performance clutch fix MT82 issues?

The MT82 has known shift quality quirks. A clutch upgrade won't fix:

  • Synchro wear
  • Shift fork issues
  • Internal bearing problems

However, a proper clutch ensures the transmission receives appropriate power delivery. Most MT82 complaints are addressed with fluid changes, shifter bushings, and cable adjustments.

Single mass vs dual mass flywheel?

The Focus ST/RS uses dual mass flywheels from factory:

  • Dual mass: Smoother, quieter, stock-like feel
  • Single mass: More responsive, some gear rattle
  • Multi-disc kits: Include matched single mass

For street cars, dual mass may be preferred for comfort. Track cars benefit from single mass response.
