GC Chassis

First Gen WRX/STI (2002-2007)

The Legend Arrives in America

The WRX finally came to the US market in 2002, bringing the turbocharged EJ205 (227 HP) to American enthusiasts. The STI followed in 2004 with the legendary EJ257 producing 300 horsepower from the factory.

These cars established Subaru's rally heritage reputation in the US market. The 2.5L turbo engines respond incredibly well to modifications—bolt-ons and a tune can push an STI past 400 horsepower.

Transmission Notes

The 5-speed manual in the WRX is the weak point in these cars, often failing at higher power levels. The STI's 6-speed is significantly stronger. Both require upgraded clutches as power increases.

GC Chassis Specifications

  • Engine EJ205/EJ257
  • WRX HP 227
  • STI HP 300
  • Transmission 5MT/6MT
  • Weight 3,100-3,300 lbs
  • Clutch Size 240mm
Hatch Era

GR Chassis WRX/STI (2008-2014)

The Hatchback Years

The GR generation introduced the beloved hatchback body style alongside the sedan. The WRX gained a 265 HP version of the turbo 2.5L, while the STI maintained its 305 HP rating.

These engines are extremely tunable. With supporting modifications, the EJ257 can reliably make 400-500+ horsepower on pump gas. E85 builds regularly exceed 600 horsepower.

Clutch Demands

The aggressive AWD launch capabilities of these cars put tremendous stress on the clutch. Sticky tires and power modifications quickly overwhelm the stock clutch's capacity.

GR Chassis Specifications

  • Engine EJ255/EJ257
  • WRX HP 265
  • STI HP 305
  • Transmission 5MT/6MT
  • Weight 3,200-3,400 lbs
  • Clutch Size 240mm
VA Chassis

VA WRX/STI (2015-2021)

Modern Platform

The VA generation brought updated styling and a new FA20 engine for the WRX (268 HP). The STI retained the proven EJ257 (310 HP). This was the final generation for the beloved EJ engine.

The FA20 responds well to bolt-ons and tuning, with many owners exceeding 350 HP with supporting mods. The STI continues to be a proven platform for 500+ HP builds.

Final EJ Era

The 2021 model year marked the end of the EJ257 era. These STIs are already becoming collectible, especially the limited editions. The platform remains one of the most capable AWD performance cars available.

VA Chassis Specifications

  • Engine FA20/EJ257
  • WRX HP 268
  • STI HP 310
  • Transmission 6MT
  • Weight 3,300-3,500 lbs
  • Clutch Size 240mm
Current Gen

VB WRX (2022+)

New Platform, New Engine

The current WRX features the FA24 2.4L turbo producing 271 horsepower. The controversial styling aside, the new platform offers improved chassis dynamics and a more responsive engine than the previous FA20.

Early tuning results show excellent potential. The larger displacement responds well to boost increases, with modified cars already exceeding 400 horsepower reliably.

No More STI

Subaru discontinued the STI with the new generation, leaving the WRX as the sole performance sedan. This makes proper clutch selection even more important for enthusiasts building power.

VB Chassis Specifications

  • Engine FA24
  • WRX HP 271
  • Transmission 6MT
  • Weight 3,400+ lbs
  • Clutch Size 240mm

WRX & STI Manual Transmissions

The STI 6-speed is the gold standard for Subaru performance

5-Speed Manual (WRX)

2002-2014

The WRX 5-speed is adequate for stock power but becomes a limitation at higher levels. Many owners upgrade to the STI 6-speed or strengthen the 5-speed internals.

  • Clutch Size 240mm
  • Torque Rating ~300 lb-ft
  • Max HP (realistic) 350-400 HP
  • Best For Stock to moderate builds
  • Note Weak 5th gear

6-Speed Manual (STI)

2004-Present

The STI 6-speed is a robust transmission that handles impressive power levels. With proper clutch selection and care, it can support 600+ horsepower reliably.

  • Clutch Size 240mm
  • Torque Rating 400+ lb-ft
  • Max HP (w/ SBC) 700+ HP
  • Best For All STI builds
  • Note DCCD center diff

WRX/STI Clutch FAQs

Common questions about Subaru clutches

What clutch for a stage 2 STI?

For a stage 2 STI (intake, downpipe, tune) making 350-380 HP:

  • Daily driver priority: Stage 2 clutch with organic friction
  • Mixed use: Stage 2 Endurance for track days
  • Aggressive driving: Stage 3 for maximum headroom

The stock clutch typically fails around 350 HP on an STI, especially with repeated hard launches.

Why does AWD wear clutches faster?

AWD vehicles put more stress on clutches because:

  • All four wheels grip during launches, maximizing load transfer
  • No single-wheel spin to relieve driveline stress
  • Higher rotational mass from additional drivetrain components

Subaru's AWD system is particularly aggressive. Our clutches are designed specifically for these demands.

Should I upgrade the WRX 5-speed?

The WRX 5-speed has known weaknesses:

  • 5th gear: Prone to failure at higher power
  • Synchros: Can wear with aggressive shifting
  • Torque limit: Generally reliable to ~350 HP

Options include: strengthening the 5-speed, swapping to the STI 6-speed, or keeping power reasonable. A proper clutch upgrade helps protect the transmission.

FA20 vs EJ257 clutch differences?

Both engines use the same 240mm clutch size, but have different characteristics:

  • EJ257: Higher torque output, more abrupt boost onset
  • FA20: Smoother power delivery, lower peak torque

The EJ257's torque spike is harder on clutches. The FA20 is generally easier on clutches at similar power levels. Both platforms use our standard Subaru clutch kits.
